Cape Town is full of fantastic breakfast spots.

Whether you want to eat French toast on a rooftop or grab treats at a farmer’s market, there are a ton of amazing places to enjoy the most important meal of the day! The only difficulty is choosing between them all.

Personally, I LOVE going out for breakfast. I’m always trying out new spots with friends, and I’ve discovered some fantastic restaurants while living here. So if you’re looking for the best places for breakfast in Cape Town, just keep on reading!

1. JARRYDS

Jarryd might sound like a guy who wears jorts, but JARRYDS is easily one of the coolest places to have breakfast in Cape Town, and I think pretty much anyone who’s ever been there will agree.

The pancakes in particular are legendary – or at least, they went viral on TikTok. Oh, and they’re definitely sharing size, by the way! My friend and I ordered a stack each, and it was WAY too much food.

They also have themed breakfast plates, which I think is such a cool idea. I have to say, the London breakfast is probably the best full English in Cape Town, but the Istanbul plate is the one I usually order.

Jarryds is along Regent Road in Sea Point (aka the main drag) and they don’t take reservations. It’s usually pretty busy here, which is testament to how good it is, but you don’t usually have to wait long for table as there’s plenty of seating.

2. Between Us

I feel like Between Us is where Cape Town’s cool kids go for breakfast. It’s got a chic, minimalist interior with a few kooky touches – like a big pair of glittery lips behind the bar.

The menu is decidedly posh, with items like polenta pancakes and rhubarb caraway compote porridge on the menu. I’ve also had the Persian herb salmon frittata and it was incredibly good!

There’s a nice, calm, atmosphere here, and the staff are really nice. I also love the iced coffee!

3. Kleinsky’s

Kleinsky’s are known for having some of the best bagels in Cape Town. It’s also a bright, fun spot that’s always busy, with friendly staff.

I love the smoked salmon bagels here but the pastrami one is really good too.

This place has proved to be so popular that they’ve now opened a spot in London! You can also buy American cereals and pop tarts in their pantry selection at the back of the restaurant, which I think is a cute, novelty touch.

4. Oranjezicht Market

The Oranjezicht Market is the perfect place to grab breakfast on the weekends.

It’s a farmer’s market at the V&A Waterfront that happens every Saturday and Sunday, and they a TON of breakfast and brunch options.

From decadent grilled cheese sandwiches to chocolate-covered strawberries and German-style pizza, you’re really spoilt for choice here. Personally, I love the jackfruit bao buns from How Bao Now (great name!)

Last time I went, I had the best fruit and granola cups from a stall in the bakery section, although I can’t remember the name!

And of course, every time I go I get a box of pasteis de nata from Vadas Bakery. They make the best custard tarts I’ve ever had in my life. I usually get two of their special “flavour of the month”, and then two of the standard version. They keep well in the fridge, so you don’t have to eat them all in one go – although I won’t judge you if you do.

The market is right next to the sea, so you can enjoy nice views while you eat. It’s the perfect place to kick off your weekend. Plus, there’s a ton to do around the Waterfront afterwards.

5. New York Bagel

Okay, I have to confess something: I have never actually been to New York Bagel.

Before you hit the backspace key in disgust, I have eaten their bagels (and their exceptional cheesecake) many times. I just usually order them on Uber Eats when I’m hungover.

New York’s smoked salmon bagel is impossible to beat. It’s so delicious, I could honestly eat it every single day.

6. Jason’s Bakery

Jason’s Bakery is a Cape Town institution!

They’re known for their insanely good pastries and crossover creations. I love the blueberry danishes here, and I often treat myself to one at the end of a morning run! The iced coffee is so yummy, too – it’s like a frappuccino, but it’s a million times better than anything you’ll find in Starbucks.

Recently, I brought my mum and sister to Jason’s when they came to visit me in Cape Town. Now, they love it just as much as I do!

Basically, everything here is just delicious, and it really does stand out as one of the best breakfast spots in Cape Town.

7. Egghead Diner

The Egghead Diner is a sunny Kloof Street spot that does amazing French toast with fried banana and ample amounts of syrup. And if you want something savoury, they’ve got great grilled cheeses and breakfast burritos!

I like the vibe of this place – it’s fun, upbeat, and the prices are reasonable. Plus, their egg rolls are the perfect hangover cure if you went too hard on Kloof Street the night before. (For more on Cape Town’s best nightlife spots, take a look at this article!)

8. The Blue Cafe

The Blue Cafe is an adorable little sidewalk cafe in Tamboerskloof. It’s been open since 1903, so it’s also quite a historic place to enjoy breakfast in Cape Town!

As well as yummy breakfast dishes, they also have a pantry section full of store cupboard goodies that you can buy and take home, like homemade mayonnaise, chutney, and lamb broth.

There’s such a nice, friendly vibe here. It’s a nice place to sit on the sidewalk, eat breakfast, and kick off a leisurely day in Cape Town.

9. Clarkes

Clarkes Dining Room is a super cool, minimalist eatery on Bree Street. It’s a great place to grab a burger or cocktails, but they also do an excellent breakfast!

They’ve actually got some pretty good breakfast specials here. On weekdays, you can get eggs on toast with coffee or a glass of orange juice for R55 between 8 and 9 am. It’s perfect for grabbing a bite before work.

They also have a little breakfast menu if you like light bites in the morning, as well as some more substantial options if you’re like me and need plenty of fuel! I recommend the Egg Sandwich.

10. Sonny and Irene

Sonny and Irene a chic, art-deco style eatery with lots of powder pink and gold. I’m pretty sure it was designed with Instagram in mind. (For more on the best Instagram spots in Cape Town, check out this post).

They’ve got lots of healthy options on the menu, like the house granola and the fruit bowl, but there are some more decadent options too.

They also serve some very elegant cocktails, in case you want to turn your breakfast into a boozy brunch!

Plus, Sonny & Irene is just a few blocks away from the Sea Point promenade, so you can always go and walk off your meal afterwards.

11. Butter

Butter is a small daytime restaurant that’s centred around one key ingredient. Yep, you guessed it, it’s butter!

Their all-day menu includes butter-based goodies like butter scones and burned butter ravioli.

I also love the fact that they serve Vietnamese-style coffee with condensed milk. I lived in Vietnam for 2.5 years, and the coffee there is like nowhere else on Earth!

So if you fancy breakfast with a buttery twist, this cool little spot is a fantastic place to try out. The original Loop Street Branch is currently being renovated, but their newer location in Sea Point is open for business!

12. Our Local

With a name like “Our Local”, you’d expect this place to make you feel at home – and that’s exactly what it does!

Our Local is like an eclectic greenhouse that someone turned into the perfect breakfast spot. With garden chairs hanging from the ceiling, tons of plants, and lots of chintzy furniture, you can see why the cool crowd eats here.

There are goodies like green shakshuka and bacon toasties available, too. I had the avo toast because, yes, I am basic, but I must say that it’s probably the best I’ve had in Cape Town! The branch in Gardens also turns into a buzzing bar almost every night, while the Sea Point branch is strictly breakfast and brunch on weekdays.

13. Coco Safar

Buckle up and prepare to experience the best croissant you’ve ever had in your entire life.

Pastries at Coco Safar are on the pricey side, but I PROMISE you that they are oh-so-worth-it!

Coco Safar is a luxurious cafe with chic decor and cosy lighting, but the food is what makes this place stand out. I do like coming here for a solo breakfast date every now and then, especially as it’s close to my pilates studio.

As I mentioned, the croissants are just out of this world. I especially love the churro-flavoured one, which is covered with cinnamon sugar and has an amazing caramel sauce inside.

But you don’t have to eat pastries at Coco Safar! They’ve got plenty of other breakfast options, including a French toast and croissant benedict, and amazing salads.

Basically, in the words of Roy Orbison, anything you want, you got it.

14. Maggy Lou’s

Wake up, Maggy, I think I’ve got something to say to you…

Maggy Lou’s is a fantastic addition to Sea Point’s Main Road. It was an instant hit so I thought it might be a bit too cool for me, but I was pleasantly surprised.

This all day cafe has a trendy yet homey atmosphere, and they serve amazing chicken burgers and pickletinis in the evening! But I digress, we’re talking about breakfast here.

From eggs benny with roasted tomatoes to bacon, egg, and chive cups that you can take to go, Maggy Lou’s won’t leave you hungry in the morning. They make simple, hearty food and great coffee, and that’s probably why this place is always buzzing!

15. Cushty Neighbourhood Deli

I actually stumbled upon Cushty Neighbourhood Deli by accident, and then it became one of my regular haunts! It’s a cosy, unpretentious spot that offers hearty breakfasts and some great options at lunchtime too, if you happen to swing by later in the day. They do amazing iced coffee and delicious fresh orange juice, and the prices are super reasonable, so make sure to check it out next time you’re in Green Point.
