Restaurant Review – Hussar Grill, Cape Town

Last Updated on July 24, 2024 by Hannah Stephenson

If you’ve got a hankering for steak (and maybe some red, red wine), then you’ve probably already come across the name “Hussar Grill”. There are two branches of this South African steakhouse chain in Cape Town, but are they worth the hype?

To be honest, the Camps Bay and Mouille Point restaurants are very, very similar, so this review works for them both. I’ve been to the Mouille Point branch more often, purely because it’s closer to where I live.

So without further ado, let’s get into this Hussar Grill restaurant review.

Where is the Hussar Grill?

One is in Mouille Point, just opposite the promenade. Mouille Point is between Sea Point and the V&A Waterfront.

The other is in Camps Bay, but it’s not along the main strip.

What’s On the Menu at Hussar Grill?

Meat, meat, and uh… more meat!

The Hussar Grill is a steakhouse, and this is South Africa, so you can expect plenty of beef, as well as ostrich and game steaks. They also have a couple of vegetarian options, like a roasted veg stack or mushroom tortellini, as well as seafood and chicken.

They’ve got some really nice wines and some reasonably priced options by the glass. However, one of my favourite things about the Hussar Grill is that you can bring your own wine if you like! They don’t charge any corkage fee, as their philosophy is that you should be able to enjoy your personal favourite bottle alongside the meat.

This is also a great money-saver, I’m not going to lie.

How Much Does It Cost to Eat at the Hussar Grill?

You’re looking at R80 to R120 for a starter, and R190 to R360 for a main course. Honestly, the prices are really reasonable here, especially for what you get!

Oh, and don’t forget dessert. I really like their malva pudding, which costs R70.

Do I Need a Reservation?

My friends and I always book a table when we go! They don’t take a deposit and it’s easy to book online. And if you want to come for the date night special, you should DEFINITELY book.

Speaking of which…

What is the Hussar Grill Date Night Special?

Uhhh, just the best deal in Cape Town!

Every Tuesday night, you can get two courses for R450 or three courses for R550 per couple.

Yup, per couple! That works out at R225 per person for two courses, or R275 for three.

To be honest, I usually find that two courses are enough. You can choose starter and main or main and dessert, and you and your fellow diner don’t have to make the same choices.

It’s not JUST two courses either. You also get olives and crisps when you arrive, and a chocolate vodka martini for dessert. Seriously, the chocolate martinis here are so indulgent – the best I’ve ever had.

Oh, yeah and a complimentary bottle of house red per couple! Not bad, right?

The only thing I will say about date night is that because the restaurants are so busy, the food isn’t quite as good as it is at other times. My steak is often a little overdone, but honestly, this is really not the end of the world.

What Are the Open Hours for the Hussar Grill?

Currently, the opening times are as follows:

  • 12 pm – 10 pm every day at Mouille Point
  • 5:30 pm – 11 pm at Camps Bay from Monday to Saturday
  • 12 pm – 11 pm at Camps Bay on Sunday

Do You Recommend Eating at the Hussar Grill?

Yes! I’ve been here so many times and I always look forward to going. I especially love the date night because it’s fun and cheap and really brightens up a Tuesday but honestly, I’d come here for dinner any day of the week.
